Using genetic techniques, microscopy, bioinformatics and novel experimental designs for snow systems he and his advisor Dr. Shawn Brown are developing hypotheses about this unique community that has adapted to survive in cold, dry, radiative and nutrient poor environments. With this work Avery hopes to bring more attention and insight to an ecosystem and fascinating phenomenon that has been imperiled by climate change.
